A semi-permeable membrane is essentially a large piece of thin film (that has many tiny holes in it) that is rolled up. These holes are so small, they will allow only water molecules through. Other things in water, such as dissolved solids, are too large to pass through the opening. We carry a wide variety of replacement membranes for all applications.
In nature, water with less dissolved solids will be attracted to water with more dissolved solids. It will move through the semi-permeable membrane to try and equalize the solution on both sides of the membrane.
With the help of a high-pressure pump, the water with a high concentration of dissolved solids is forced through the membrane opposite the direction it would flow in nature. The water molecules pass through the membrane leaving everything else on the other side.
This tubular membrane fits inside of a rigid membrane housing and there can be as little as one membrane for an entire system or as many as several hundred. This design requires the RO feed water be pre-treated so that all hardness and chlorine is removed. We specialize in pre-treatment systems such as water softeners and carbon filtration.
The high-pressure pumps used in reverse osmosis machines vary in size and power. The smallest pumps have small motors that can be powered by a normal 120v outlet. Larger pumps require big motors that can require up to 3-phase 480v to operate. We service all brands and sizes of pumps and motors ranging from small ProCon units to large centrifugal VFD units.
The table above shows four different methods of water filtration. As you can see, the reverse osmosis method is the only way to remove all of the minerals and contaminants in water. This method guarantees safe, clean water that is 99% (or higher) pure H2O. If your RO isn't performing like it should, let us help you get it back in spec.
