First of all, what is hard water? Hardness in water is due to the presence of certain minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, aluminum, and zinc. These minerals can wreak havoc on any water system, but the main concern is usually mineral deposits known as scale. With the help of a water softener, these minerals can be easily removed from your water, leaving behind soft water. Here are just a few of the ways that using soft water can save you money.
The minerals in hard water will cling to anything it comes in contact with, including pipes, heat exchangers, plumbing fixtures, and tubs and showers. It will accumulate slowly over time eventually causing major problems in a lot of cases. If the hard water is being heated, this process is greatly accelerated.
Soft water can eliminate scaling in water heaters and boilers, saving thousands of dollars in equipment repair and replacement.
Soap scum is a white film that builds up quickly on dishes, dish washers, and showers. This hard-to-remove film is caused by soap reacting with hard water and it can only be removed with harsh chemicals and tedious scrubbing. Washing glassware with hard water will also cause "etching" in the glass itself, causing it to turn a cloudy white over time by carving little pits into the surface which cannot be removed.
Soap scum and etching can be completely avoided by using soft water during the washing process, eliminating the need for routine deep cleaning and de-scale cycles, saving time and money.
Hardness minerals in water like calcium react with soap to form useless curds, preventing the formation of a rich lather for required for adequate cleaning. To counteract this reaction, more soap must be used than necessary to do the job, often 3 or 4 times the amount.
Using soft water for washing leads to saving money by cutting back massively on the amount of soap needed. Soap consumption will be reduced by 50-75% in most cases and this applies to dish machines, clothes washers, car washes, anything else that uses large amounts of soap.
When fabrics are washed in hard water some of the calcium and excess soap will leave deposits on the fabric, making it more "stiff" which can cause the fibers to actually break when bent, causing it to wear out prematurely. Hard water will also cause colors to fade quicker and whites to darken quicker. Heavily soiled or stained fabrics washed in hard water are also more prone to become re-soiled with greater ease.
Fabrics such as hotel bedsheets, uniforms, rugs, curtains, and towels will feel much more soft and fluffy after being washing with soft water because they will actually be cleaner. They will retain color longer and not break down as quickly. Laundry facilities can save tons of money by extending the life of fabrics instead of having to replace them as often.
